I believe that self discipline is a skill, not a talent. It is not something that some people have and others lack. Self control is something that must be practiced. Each person must create an awareness that is constantly present within themselves.
Too often in this era of bad television and fast automobiles do we forget our self discipline. It is so easy to set aside our values without even realizing it. Without a strong self discipline we end up considering the ramifications of our actions long after the fact.
Discipline improves with practice. Lent is the perfect time to build self awareness and self discipline. Even going without meat on Fridays helps me learn self control. Assigning myself another arbitrary rule will help me bring myself into a constant awareness.
This is why I have decided to give up corn for lent.
Yes. Corn. All corn products are now off my menu. My reasons are not entirely arbitrary, but I will discuss that another time. Every time I forego a dish because it contains some corn product I will remember my Lenten resolution. Every time I think of my resolution my self awareness will improve.
Just for the record I should probably mention that I have already failed once. Yesterday I ate pizza sauce that contained corn syrup. Failure can teach us just as much as success. Yesterday I learned that if I am going to come up with wacky dietary restrictions I should probably tell my wife before she starts cooking super.

I hate to tell you that it may be more difficult to give up corn than that. I heard a story on NPR (I think All Things Considered) about how much STUFF is actually made from corn.
Best of luck to you!
Isn’t high fructose corn syrup used to sweeten pretty much everything in this silly country of ours? Here’s an interesting list; don’t now how complete it is, but there are a lot of things on it… including ketchup. weird.

It is true. Corn syrup and corn starch are used in most preprocessed foods. That’s what makes this interesting. I found out yesterday that my generic Wheat Thins have corn in them.
I love Michael Pollan…here’s a great article about corn…

I have a friend that is allergic to corn. She can’t drink most types of Soda. It’s always fairly stressful trying to plan meals that she can eat with us.
